Certa Ireland fuels Tesco's lower carbon delivery

Certa Ireland, part of DCC Energy, is supporting Tesco Ireland’s transition to lower‑carbon transport through the rollout of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) across its home delivery fleet.

Tesco Ireland has transitioned 164 of its Grocery Home Shopping delivery vans from diesel to HVO, a renewable fuel which can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 90% compared with conventional diesel.

Over one third of Tesco’s home delivery fleet now operates on lower‑carbon fuel, with plans to increase this to 50% by year end. Approximately 20,000 weekly customer deliveries are now fulfilled using HVO-powered vehicles.

Produced from waste-based feedstocks, HVO can be used as a direct replacement for diesel without engine modification, enabling an immediate reduction in emissions using existing vehicles while longer-term decarbonisation solutions continue to develop.

Certa is supplying HVO through its growing nationwide network of refuelling stations, supporting Tesco customers in 15 locations across Ireland, with further expansion planned.

This initiative supports Tesco Ireland’s ambition to achieve net zero across its own operations by 2035 and demonstrates how large fleets can materially reduce emissions today.
